Trappers have captured an alligator outside of East Lake High School in Tarpon Springs on Thursday morning.

The alligator was spotted outside the school and was detained between buildings, the Pinellas County sheriff’s office tells News Channel 8.

Florida Fish and Wildlife officials say the gator was about 6-7 feet long. Trappers with FWC arrived on scene around 7:15 a.m. and were quickly able to capture the gator.

A school administrator tells News Channel 8 the gator was discovered when he arrived on campus around 6 a.m. He says he first thought it was a senior prank, being that time of year, however no students were around so he called in the trapper. He says the school has had lots of wildlife on campus before, but was unsure if this was the first gator on campus.

Students were kept at a distance while the gator was captured. No one was in danger at any point.

School administrators say classes will start as scheduled.
