Two children, a 2 year old boy and a 5 year old girl, were among five people who received minor leg injuries Thursday afternoon during an accidental shooting in the lobby of a Clearwater hotel on Sand Key.
Clearwater Police and Clearwater Fire & Rescue responded to the shooting which happened at 2:24 p.m in the lobby of the Clearwater Beach Marriott Suites at 1201 Gulf Blvd.
Witness Amanda Busick heard the shot and wondered if she should duck or run. “This insanely loud noise, within the lobby of course, echoed and then kids just immediately started crying,” Busick said.
A Clearwater Police Department spokesperson said Stan Lee of Ormond Beach, Florida was carrying a 9 mm Glock handgun in his pocket. Lee was at the front desk of the lobby to check in. He reached into his left pocket for his wallet and accidentally discharged the gun.
The bullet grazed Lee’s leg and then hit the tile of the floor. Four other people, including the children and desk clerk Daniel Morrison were hit by tile debris.
“You just don’t expect to hear gunshots inside of a lobby. I mean, we’re down here for work, but people are on vacation so it took everyone by surprise for sure,” Busick said.
Lee has a concealed weapons permit. “A charge of culpable negligence was forwarded to the Pasco-Pinellas State Attorney’s Office,” Police said.
Three of the injured received medical treatment at a clinic, and the fourth was also taken to Morton Plant Hospital.
