A Lakeland man is in jail after fatally stabbing his wife in front of his 15-year-old daughter, Polk County Sheriff’s detectives said.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Polk County deputies were dispatched to 1263 Scottsland Drive in Lakeland after receiving a call about a battery at that address.

When the responding deputy Dennis Jones arrived, he saw Michael Lee Finn, 46, stab Kristen Finn, 34, according to PCSO report.

Deputies released the details of the stabbing. According to the updated report, Michael Finn, his 15-year-old daughter from the previous relationship, and his wife Kristen Finn were near the family pool, when Michael and Kristen started fighting. Finn tried to throw a baseball at Kristen but she took it away. He punched her in the face.

According to the PCSO report, Kristen and the teen ran to the front yard and called 911. That’s when Michael charged at her with a knife he took from the kitchen. She ran to a near-by empty lot but couldn’t escape the attack.

Deputy Jones saw her running and Michael holding the knife in his hand. Jones ordered him to drop the knife and took him into custody. According to PCSO, while he was arrested, Michael Finn said “I should have killed her” addressing this to his daughter.

Jones tried to keep Kristen Finn alive until the paramedics arrived. She was taken to the Lakeland Regional Medical Center where doctors pronounced her dead.

Michael Finn was booked into the Polk County Jail on the charge of first-degree murder of Kristen Finn.

“The violent death this mother suffered is unthinkable,” Polk Sheriff Grady Judd said. “But the fact that the murder occurred in front of a child during Mother’s Day weekend is horrific. Michael Finn is in jail where he belongs and we will work to ensure he never leaves and never gets another chance to victimize innocent people.”

Michael Finn’s arrest history includes four previous trips to the Polk County Jail. He has previously been arrested on charges of battery domestic violence and battery on an officer/firefighter/EMT.
