Thanks to technology, saving money is easier than ever.
There are thousands of apps designed to do just that. The days of clipping coupons are over.
Candace Blackburn is frugal by nature. She owns The Missing Piece consignment stores in Tampa and Clearwater. “I will never pay retail for anything. I can always find a coupon. I can always find a discount,” Blackburn said.
She uses two of the top five apps we found rank highly with consumers. First, there’s Snip Snap. You type in any store and it will show you all of the coupons currently available.
Blackburn also loves Target’s Cartwheel app. It allows you to choose the deals you want. When you go to check out, the cashier simply scans your Cartwheel bar code and all of your savings are applied in one simple swipe.
The third app on our top five list is Gas Buddy. “We don’t do any traditional advertising but we’ve gotten 50,000 people to download this app,” said Gregg Laskoski, a senior petroleum analyst with Gas Buddy.
This app uses crowd sourcing to help you find the cheapest gas in your area. The typical price spread in the Tampa Bay area gas market is 27 cents between the highest and lowest priced gas. So letting Gas Buddy point you in the direction of cheaper gas can save you big time.
“If you’re not using this app, you might be one of the unfortunate folks who is paying about 27 cents more than you need to,” Laskoski said.
At number four on our list: the Amazon app. This simple app lets you scan any barcode when you’re out shopping to see if there’s a better price available on Amazon.
Rounding out the top five, is the Red Laser app, which keeps all of your store loyalty cards in one place. It also helps you keep track of the products you love. That makes comparing prices between retailers really simple.
