R & B singer Ben E. King, best known for the hit “Stand By Me,” has died of natural causes at age 76.

The Telegraph reports that King’s publicist confirmed that King died on Thursday. 

The hit song, Stand By Me was released in 1961.

King was also a member of the Drifters, who released the hit songs There Goes My Baby in 1959 and Save the Last Dance for Me.

King was born on September 28, 1938 in Henderson, North Carolina and move to Harlem, New York when he was 9 years old. His birth name was Benjamin Earl Nelson, according to the Ben E King website.
