Jameis Winston is coming to Tampa, this time as an official member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Bucs selected the quarterback with the first pick in the NFL draft and Friday the team is going to show him off at a press conference. Team officials will hold a 4 p.m. news conference with reporters at One Buc Place.
After Thursday night’s announcement, Coach Lovie Smith told reporters they’ve been eying Winston since the end of the regular season, and they are confident they made the right choice.
Coach Smith said, “I just really believe in him. I trust my instincts on people to know who we’re getting, and of course we wanted to get another good football player and another good guy.”
Winston is excited to call Tampa home.
“Everything I thought it would be. I got my family out here representing, I’m blessed I’m so blessed to be out here, be with everybody. Now I’m part of a new family, being a Buccaneer and I can’t wait to get to Tampa Bay and enjoy.”
Jameis Winston is a Heisman trophy winner, he won a national championship, but he also had his off the field issues too.
The Bucs organization spent months doing some careful research. They interviewed his family, friends and coaches.
Coach Smith said he feels Jameis is mature enough to handle the responsibilities of the job.
“We have some people that care about our organization that will be around our organization and for our veterans, any player coming in, there’s a role that veterans play in our locker room, but we wouldn’t bring anybody in to be babysit,” Smith said.
GM Jason Licht said, “Jameis is his own man. And Jameis is going to heed the advice of a lot of veterans, I’m sure of it. I’ve had discussions with him about it, but Jameis is going to be his own man. He has to find his own way, just like all of our players.”
The Bucs have issued Jameis the number 3 jersey. They’re already taking orders for fans to purchase one.
The Bucs home opener is against the Titans, which selected the number 2 pick, Marcus Mariota.
