Pasco County sheriff’s spokesman Eddie Daniels has confirmed the sheriff’s office is launching an investigation into allegations money was taken from the Oulsen Family Fund.
“The investigation has been launched,” Daniels said Friday evening.
Daniels said the missing fund investigation is just getting underway, so much work is ahead.
“We received a complaint,” said Daniels, adding he did not have information about who filed the complaint.
Daniels said the sheriff’s office did not know how much money, if any, had actually been taken from the fund.
“It’s too early to say if that is the case,” Daniels said. “We are trying to determine what was taken.”
The fund was created in January after Chad Oulsen was shot to death in a Wesley Chapel movie theater. Curtis Reeves, another moviegoer and a former Tampa Police supervisor, has been arrested and charged in the shooting.
Pasco County sheriff’s officials said at the time the shooter apparently was upset Oulsen was texting in the movie theater. Reeves has been released from jail, awaiting trial.
Supporters rallied to help the Oulsen family after the shooting in January. They raised thousands of dollars by holding motorcycle rides and other fundraising events to help create a college fund for Oulsen’s young daughter.
