KB Home repairs to Willowbrook condos underway; residents not impressed

The sounds of construction echo through the Willowbrook condo neighborhood daily.

It’s been like this since October when KB Home began dismantling the condos and peeling away rotten wood. Residents say progress is slow and workers keep discovering more and more damage.

“When this whole thing started you heard a lot of us screaming “buy back, buy back,” said Armando Oyola-Delgado, “and this is the reason. We’re tired of it.”

Oyola-Delgado was one of the original homeowners to come to 8 On Your Side last August, complaining of mold and balconies that literally fell off.

Our 8 On Your Side investigation found serious problems – like boards not nailed down, and hurricane straps missing. County officials demanded answers from county inspectors and the builder. Now, KB has reached a repair agreement with Willowbrook’s condo association.

But residents aren’t impressed.

“They projected it would take 30 days in a building,” Oyola-Delgado said, adding that one building has been under construction since October and the other since November. Neither appears close to completion.

KB first said it would replace balconies but Oyola-Delgado says workers keep finding more damage. And he’s not happy with what they’re doing with it.

“I see a lot of old material being recycled and reused. We’re talking about material that has mold on it, water damage on it. So we don’t agree with that being used,” he said.

Only three buildings are under repair right now. Patrick McGettigan says he finds more damage to his condo daily. With 51 buildings to repair, he worries when KB will get around to his home.

“This is what we’re dealing with. It’s getting worse by the day, and there’s nothing else we can do about it,” McGettigan said. He also worries about relocation. Residents with homes under construction right now are living around the mess.

“They cannot expect you to live like this.” McGettigan said.
